A pause. Then the door clicked open.

The girl — the ghost, the dream, whatever she was — smiled sadly. “That’s not true. You just don’t want to.”

Ray didn’t deny it. He’d taken Chloe to a diner last week. She’d noticed the bruise on his knuckles, the way he scanned every room for exits. She’d asked if he was a bouncer. He said yes. She laughed and said, “You’ve got sad eyes for a bouncer.”

He knocked on her door. When she opened it, hair a mess, wrapped in a too-big hoodie, she smiled.

He buzzed Chloe’s apartment.

“Then why are you still here?”
