So why does the Vitalis Project need me

“I’m confused,” she admitted. “You’re healthy. Perfectly healthy. So why does the Vitalis Project need me? What are you missing?”

She opened her Implant’s diagnostic log.

She saw his chest rise and fall. She saw the faint pulse in his neck. She saw the way his fingers turned a page—slowly, as if savoring friction.

The room beyond was not a lab. It was a habitat. Warm light, the color of late afternoon. A real tree—not a hologram—grew from a patch of soil in the center of the floor. Its leaves moved in an artificial breeze. And sitting on a wooden bench beneath the tree was a man.

The board stirred.

“You’re the Echo curator,” he said. Not a question.

She felt it. And for the first time, she felt her own heart answer.

Subject Seven was watering the tree. He looked up. Saw her red eyes, her unwashed hair, the way she held her shoulders—not straight and optimized, but slumped and real.
