The film was a critical and commercial success, winning the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and earning Saif Ali Khan his first National Award for Best Actor. The story follows Karan (Saif Ali Khan) and Rhea (Rani Mukerji) over several years, meeting at different stages of their lives. The narrative is divided into "phases" with animated interludes featuring two cartoon characters (also named Hum and Tum).

Karan is now a successful cartoonist. He meets Rhea in Paris, but she is separated from her husband. They spend time together, and Karan realizes he loves her. However, Rhea’s husband tries to reconcile, and Rhea decides to give her marriage another chance, leaving Karan heartbroken.

Karan is a carefree, womanizing cartoonist. Rhea is a traditional, serious student. They meet on a flight to New York. Karan tries to flirt; Rhea rejects him. They part ways, disliking each other.

Years later, they meet again in Amsterdam. Karan is still immature. Rhea is now married. They become friends, but Karan secretly falls for her. Before he can confess, Rhea reveals she’s moving to India with her husband.
