Kael stood over him, the rifle humming. The silence rushed back in, broken only by the endless, mindless hiss of the rain. He looked at his own hand. It was shaking.

“Blade Runner,” Lucian said. His voice was soft, almost musical. “I wondered which one they’d send.” blade runner 1982

“To retire a faulty appliance,” Lucian said. He gestured to the water falling around him. “But I wasn’t running. I came here.” Kael stood over him, the rifle humming

Kael’s finger tightened on the trigger. “Last words?” It was shaking

He was six feet away now. Close enough that Kael could see the individual droplets clinging to his eyelashes.

“Look at the water,” Lucian said. “Just for a second. Before you pull that trigger. Look at it.”

Kael had recited that mantra a thousand times. It was the only thing that let him sleep.
